East Midlands Airport Sculpture 09

From July 2009, Mantle Community Arts will be working with East Midlands Airport, to commission a third sculpture for their Airport Perimeter Trail. The Perimeter Trail runs around the outside of the Airport. It has views over open fields and incorporates areas of new planting. It is widely used by local ramblers and is also a focus of education projects with nearby schools.

The first two commissions, undertaken over the last few years, involved the creation of thirteen large carved stepping stones and a carved wood sculpture based on natural forms. This year we are looking for a sculptor to create something which will complement and contrast with the existing artwork and enhance the space.

An important part of these commissions has always been community involvement in the design and/or creation of the final piece. This year we will be looking for an artist with their own ideas of how to involve the community in the project, whilst maintaining the quality and integrity of the final work. We will be focussing on teenagers meeting at local youth centres and on the local middle schools.

East Midlands Airport is committed to improving the landscape around the airport and increasing the appeal and usefulness of the spaces. Art will take a key part in the future development of the trail which we hope will complement our work in education and the environment. Watch this space for more information and confirmation of our lead artist....
